Categories Drinking Game: Rules and Category Ideas

Categories is a fast, low-setup game that rewards quick thinking under mild pressure. One player names a category, then the group goes around naming things that fit until someone hesitates, repeats an answer, or names something that doesn't belong, and drinks.
How to play
- One player names a category: "types of pasta," "90s sitcoms," "countries in Europe."
- Going around the circle, each player names one item that fits, within a few seconds.
- Repeating a previous answer, going silent, or naming something invalid means you drink.
- After a fail, either restart the round with a new category or keep going until only one player is left.
- Rotate who picks the next category.
Timing rules
Most groups use a soft 5-second count, either counted out loud or on a phone timer. For a harder version, drop it to 3 seconds, or add a rule that a category can't be repeated for the rest of the game.
Category ideas
Easy: fruits, dog breeds, Disney movies, fast food chains. Medium: one-hit wonders, board games, world capitals. Hard: types of clouds, Shakespeare plays, prime numbers under 100.
Variations
For a harder version, ban single-word answers on categories that allow them, or require alphabetical order: the next answer has to start with the next letter of the alphabet from the last one. Teams work well for a bigger group too: pair up and let each pair confer for a second before answering, which slows the pace but rewards actual thinking over blurting the first thing that comes to mind.
